The General: Vietnam in the Age of To Lam is coming to Japan
We are deeply honored that The General has been selected for a special screening at Meiji Gakuin University’s International Peace Research Institute (PRIME) in Tokyo.
Established in 1986, PRIME is one of Japan’s leading academic institutes dedicated to peace research. Its work extends beyond the study of war and conflict to encompass human rights, democracy, justice, development, and the many forms of structural violence that threaten human dignity. Through research, education, and public dialogue, PRIME brings together scholars, students, civil society, and peace practitioners to confront some of the world’s most pressing challenges. (PRIME)
For "The General" to be screened in this setting is especially meaningful. The documentary explores the rise of authoritarianism in Vietnam, the suppression of fundamental freedoms, and the growing reach of transnational repression beyond Vietnam’s borders. These are not only political issues—they are questions of peace, justice, and human dignity that resonate far beyond one country.
We hope the film will contribute to thoughtful discussion among students, researchers, and members of the public about the importance of protecting human rights and defending democratic values.
